Michael "Iron Man" Burks has been flexing his musical muscles for most of his life. The Milwaukee guitarist grew up in a musical family and began learning music when he was about two. By the age of five, his father was motivating him to learn by giving him a dollar for every song he learned. (The motivational plan proved to be hugely successful and eventually became prohibitively expensive.) Despite playing regularly for years, Burks didn't release his first album until 1997, but over the last decade he's put out a stack of fine albums for Alligator Records: 2001's Make It Rain, 2003's I Smell Smoke, and 2008's Iron Man all reveal him to be an absolutely incendiary musician with a knack for choosing great songs to cover and also for writing a few mean tracks himself. The Best of Michael "Iron Man" Burks provides an excellent overview of his smokin' stuff, and we highly recommend just about everything this underrated musician has done.
