Over the past half-decade or so, Florida-born roots-and-blues artist JJ Grey and his band Mofro have quietly built an international following by touring constantly anywhere that would have them, which includes Europe (JJ is HUGE in England!), and the southern parts of Asia (Japan, Australia) as well as the U.S. and Canada. While albums like Georgia Warhorse and Orange Blossoms have earned the singer, songwriter, and guitarist much critical acclaim, it's Grey's dynamic live performances that have brought in the fans.
On September 13, 2011 Alligator Records will be releasing Brighter Days, a deluxe live DVD/CD combo that documents a January 2011 performance at Atlanta's Variety Playhouse by JJ Grey & Mofro. The two-hour DVD features a film directed by musician and filmmaker Spookie Daly that mixes electrifying live footage from the show with band interviews and commentary from Grey and others, all shot in high-def with 5.1 surround sound. The CD provides the audio document of the performance, every song displaying Grey's immense skills as a storytelling songwriter and charismatic performer.
JJ Grey's sound has been described as "front porch soul," a unique and exciting blend of roots-rock, blues, soul, funk, and country music that is as influenced by Otis Redding as it is by Lynyrd Skynyrd. With Brighter Days, Grey goes a long way towards bringing his live show home to the fans; expect this two-disc set to move off the shelves faster than a hound chasing a scent.
